New Visions: A Selection of the Latest Acquisitions from the IDB Art Collection, 2008-2011

The present exhibition entitled New Visions: A Selection of the Latest Acquisitions from the IDB Art Collection, 2008-2011 is part of the 19th anniversary celebrations of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Cultural Center, originally inaugurated on May 15th 1992 by the President of Chile, Patricio Aylwin.

On this occasion the IDB Cultural Center is pleased to present an exhibit of the artworks that became part of the Collection through the acquisition fund, gifts and permanent loans. It features 25 art works by 17 artists such as Federico Martino, Sebastián Spreng, and Susana Sulic (Argentina); Gastón Orellana (Chile); Ana Isabel Díez Zuluaga and Omar Rayo (Colombia); Silvia Elena Monge Puig (Costa Rica); Niurka Barroso (Cuba-Canada); Carmen Herrera and Emilio Sánchez (Cuba-United States); Julio Valdez (Dominican Republic); Geovanny Verdezoto (Ecuador); Luis González Palma (Guatemala); Mireille Délice (Haiti); Antonio López Sáenz and Alberto Alejandro Millares Méndez (Mexico); and Naúl Ojeda (Uruguay).

About the exhibition
This exhibition of photographs presents a powerful visual narrative of the cultures, conflicts and conquests that forged the New World. Covering significant ruins in Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and South America, Lost Worlds offers a unique pictorial survey of the geographical, architectural and historical diversity that defines the Americas.

We would like to cordially extend to you an invitation to visit the exhibit “Against all odds: Rescue at the Chilean Mine”, which shows the great achievement of the 33 miners’ rescue at the San José Mine in Northern Chile last year. This exhibit will be open to the public for 10 months (until May 2012) completely free at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC.

The exhibit was organized in collaboration with the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and the Embassy of Chile, and was made possible by the great contributions of private businesses and the support of the Department of State. It displays more than 20 objects used by the miners and rescuers in the operation, including the Fénix 1 Capsule, as well as many photos and texts in English and Spanish. The exhibit was set up in less than 5 months, record time for an event of this sort.

The display will be open from August 5, date of the accident’s first anniversary. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alfredo Moreno, the Minister of Mining, Hernán de Solminihac, and four of the Chilean miners, attended the inauguration of the exhibit.

Estimados amigos,

Queremos extenderles una cordial invitación a visitar la exhibición “Contra toda adversidad: rescate en la mina chilena”, que relata la impactante hazaña de rescate de los 33 mineros en la mina San José el año recién pasado, y que estará abierta al público durante diez meses (hasta mayo de 2012) y de manera gratuita en el Museo Nacional de Historia Natural en Washington DC.

La exhibición fue realizada de manera conjunta por este museo Smithsonian y la Embajada de Chile en Estados Unidos, y fue posible gracias al aporte de empresas privadas y la colaboración del Departamento de Estado. Está compuesta por más de 20 objetos usados por mineros y rescatistas, incluyendo la cápsula Fénix 1, además de fotografías y textos en inglés y español. Cabe destacar que el montaje se realizó en menos de 5 meses, lo que constituye un tiempo récord para un evento de este tipo.

La muestra está abierta desde el 5 de agosto, fecha del primero aniversario del accidente minero. Para su inauguración se contó con la presencia desde Chile del Canciller Alfredo Moreno, el Ministro de Minería Hernán de Solminihac y cuatro de los mineros rescatados.

Behind a big part of the artistic and musical works of the history of art, there is a relation with geometry. It inspires, gives cohesion and hierarchy. Here we find an aim for order that lies beneath the subconscious, common to all human beings, today and yesterday. During the Renaissance, in Egypt, in contemporary art, in primitive cultures, in the child that draws the sun with a circle, in the solemnity of worship places.

Picasso sustains it, ironically, “Don’t look for interpretations in Guernica. It is only a bull fight in a basement, united by a triangle and a light bulb”.

During a trip I made to India and Nepal a surrounding, powerful, geometric form was fixed in my eyes and memory, present in sculptures, images, music and architecture. This was the spiral, that is born wide, swallowing all that exists like a flowing river or a snake, that later stirs in itself to compress in slimmer forms, become minimal, to gradually grow bigger like it was before, in an unstoppable movement that forms a wavy surface; a chaotic order of universe in a one of a kind swirl of a life and energy.

Curatos Alfredo Ratinoff said, “Marcelo Novo creates in this series of paintings a new reality where the themes and subject co-exist between two worlds of realm and subjectivity bringing the viewer to a new place.

DUO AMARAL (GUITARS): MEXICO & ISRAEL

We enjoy the performance of one guitarist. How about two?

This young husband and wife duo has been gaining momentum and attracting fans throughout the US and abroad. Their reputation grows with each concert  and master class they give.

Their Marlow Guitar Series debut will offer you the magic  of two talented guitarists  playing on twelve strings with four gifted hands.

Duo Amaral has come together from opposite sides of the world to share their artistry and musicianship. Mia Pomerantz-Amaral and Jorge Amaral finished their studies at the Peabody Conservatory of Music of the Johns Hopkins University. They both received Master of Music and Graduate Performance Degree with Manuel Barrueco and Julian Gray, respectively.

Although the duo has been recently formed, they have already been invited to perform in festivals in Europe, South America, and the USA. Their playing has been described as “masterful with poetic virtuosity, intensity of expression; playful in its timbre and inventiveness.”

Prizewinner of several International Guitar Competitions, Mia began her early musical education at the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem, Israel before her studies in the USA. The Italian newspaper “Messaggero Veneto” described her playing as “a powerful sound… beautiful, rich in harmony and with a sure, clean technique.” Mia serves as faculty member at the Levine School of Music in Washington, DC as well as the International School of Music in Bethesda, Maryland.

Jorge, a native of Guadalajara Mexico, is considered by many as one of the most exceptional Mexican players of his generation. He has been described by Alirio Diaz as “a brilliant figure in the future of the classical guitar.’ Jorge has toured widely through Europe, Mexico and the USA as Performer, Juror and Teacher. He is a faculty member of the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory in Ohio.

The duo focuses on a wide repertoire, from the Baroque to the Contemporary and is always seeking innovative interpretation to explore and share with audiences in the US and abroad. Duo Amaral recently released their debut album ‘Suplica.’

“Conversación” 

“This exhibition represents a year-long collaboration between the two artists, one from Mexico and one an annual visitor to Mexico which with a single photograph sent by Pablo Ortiz Monasterio as a digital file to Muriel Hasbun, who replied by sending back one of her own. This exchange went on for months. Each responded to the next image in his or her own way, not knowing where the accumulating sequence was leading or what its narrative content ultimately might be. Other than agreeing on the ground rules, they did not discuss what they were doing while the exchange was taking place.

The show thus uses photography to probe the possibilities of cultural and visual exchange in a digital age. Taking place over the Internet, with one artist in Mexico City and one in Washington, D.C., the conversation is a wordless interplay of information and meaning.

Indeed, Conversación is ultimately about how art is made and how meaning is constructed. Every move the artists make is smart in an intellectual sense but also deeply intuitive, a gesture of not knowing more than it is of knowing. To trust each other in this process, to collaborate in the territory of risk and uncertainty where one can feel vulnerable and even foolish, is as much an accomplishment for these artists as is the beauty of the individual images and the mystery of their sequencing.”

“MAREMAGNUM”: JORDI SOCÍAS PHOTOGRAPHY

A visual journey through the last four decades in Spain and Europe guided by an icon of photojournalism. Jordi Socías (Barcelona, 1945) is one of the key names of the evolution of Spanish photojournalism in the last decades. Its personal style is also an essential element of the layout of the history of Spanish photography, a style that moves away from the objectivity deemed inherent in photography and which becomes aware of its own subjective representation nature. The most important figures and events of the country’s modern history have posed for him, building, through images, a fascinating tale of life since the ‘70’s, when he started his career, until now.

The recognized violinist from Venezuela, Lewis Flores, will give a free concert at the Bolivarian Hall, the cultural space of the Embassy Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to the U.S., on Thursday, December 8^th at 7 p.m.

Flores began his music education at age nine, when he joined the Juan José Landaeta Symphony Orchestra. He studied violin with Rubén Tarío Coba, who coordinated the National Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, and soon became that institution’s first violinist.

At age 12, Flores auditioned for the Antonio Lauro Symphony Orchestra in the state of Bolívar, Venezuela, and he became that orchestra’s “concertino,” or designated soloist. He has since performed at important venues nationally and internationally in countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Italy and the UK.

Due to his exceptional talent, this Venezuelan violinist was chosen to participate in an International Orchestra competition in the U.S., where he performed with the Simón Bolívar National Symphony Orchestra at the United Nations headquarters in New York and at Washington, DC’s Kennedy Center and Inter-American Development Bank.
